Background:  Residents of Washington D.C. are currently taxed but do not have voting representation in Congress. They are represented by a non-voting member of the House of Representatives, and they do not have any representation in the U.S. Senate. D.C. has a larger population than Vermont and Wyoming and pays over $30 million in federal taxes.  

What this legislation does:  This resolution would call for the District of Columbia to be admitted as the 51st state of the Union.
